We live in an age where information is only a mouse click, or a phone tap, away. While this is wonderful at times, it can also lead to a lot of confusing and misleading data — especially when it comes to dieting and weight loss. Because we know you’ve likely searched weight loss tips (or how to get abs in seven days — we’ve all been there), we wanted to take the time to dispel some of the biggest myths we’ve heard. Losing weight is hard, and you don’t need misleading information bogging you down! 

Myth #1 Losing weight is a linear process

It would be oh so convenient if this were true! You would think that by dieting and exercising that the pounds would simply melt away. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Everyone is built differently. We all have unique genetic makeup, and our bodies react differently to calorie deficit and exercise. When beginning a new diet or launching into a new workout routine, keep in mind that your weight loss could be steady (and resemble a seesaw sometimes!) Be patient. Two pounds lost and a pound gained could be the norm for a while! 

Myth #2 You have to do a lot of cardio to lose weight

Want a lean physique? Then befriend the weights. While cardio can help us get our heart rate up, weight lifting is also a powerful tool for scorching fat and building muscle. Like anything else in life, it’s all about balance and moderation. Your workouts should be varied and feature cardio and strength training.

Myth #3 Cutting out carbs will make you lose weight

The only thing cutting out carbs will do is make you hangry! While this may work for some people, completely cutting out carbs definitely is not for everyone. Plus, we need them to keep our energy up. Try reaching for good carbs, like starchy vegetables and fruits instead of the naughty carbs like sugary cereals and white pasta. 

Myth #4 You can exercise the weight off

Yes, having an established workout routine is key to building healthy body composition, but it’s not the only piece of the weight loss puzzle. In order to truly see great results, you MUST dial in your diet. No ifs, ands or buts on this one. You can’t devour an entire pizza and a dozen doughnuts and expect to work it all off on the treadmill. Again, it’s all about moderation and having a steady pace. Eat well and workout well — that’s the secret sauce! 

Myth #5 Healthy food is more expensive

While buying healthy foods in bulk is likely more expensive than booking it through the drive-thru and ordering off the dollar menu, it’s not necessarily true that eating healthy is more expensive. There are so many ways to cut costs at the grocery store (and ultimately cut pounds off your weight). By shopping smartly, you can unlock deals and figure out which grocery stores offer the best prices. Plus, by eating healthy, you might actually see your bank account benefit — after all, if you’re eating healthy, chances are you’re not going to restaurants and hitting the bars as much.
