What are some images that come to mind when you hear “weight loss?” Likely, it’s a treadmill and a lot of sweat. Cardio workouts (running, jogging, spinning) have long been associated with weight loss. If we’re not panting and getting our heart rate up for a consistent amount of time, then we’re not really exercising, right? Well, not exactly. While cardio workouts are a great way to burn calories and shave off weight, they’re not the only way (or necessarily the best) way to lose weight. If you’re looking to build a lean physique, then consider adding in weight training to your daily workout routine. Because muscle burns more calories at rest than some other tissues, including fat, weight training can help jumpstart your weight loss journey in a big way.

Here are just a few of the big benefits of adding weight training into your fitness journey:

Increased Resting Metabolism

Studies have shown that your metabolism may stay elevated for longer after a weight-training workout in comparison to straight cardio. So, while you may be sweating and panting longer DURING a cardio workout, you might actually keep burning calories for longer AFTER a weight-training workout. (And who doesn’t love burning calories by simply resting? Count us in!)

Exposure to Diverse Movements

There are literally hundreds of movement patterns to master when it comes to weight training — each one targeting a different muscle group. These movement patterns work to strengthen the body in a holistic way. Plus, you won’t get “burned out” on weight training as quickly. Because you can do something new every day, you’ll consistently be challenged and engaged — making workouts more enticing and enjoyable.

More Fun!

We’ve had countless members enter our gyms with zero weight lifting experience. And, almost every time, they become instantly hooked on the barbells, dumbbells and other weighted gym equipment. Because weight training takes time to master, it can become somewhat of a hobby for members. It engages both the mind and the body. Once you master weight lifting, chances are you’ll notice other areas of your life begin to improve. Because there is something innately empowering about lifting weights, you’ll find yourself wanting to face challenges elsewhere. The benefits are endless!
