We all know what we like to eat, but do we really know why and when we need to eat certain foods versus when to take supplements? Most people think supplements are actual food substitutes, but they aren’t!

Let’s define food and supplement:

material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth, repair, and vital processes and to furnish energy; something that nourishes, sustains, or supplies.

A product taken orally that contains one or more ingredients (examples are vitamins or amino acids) that are intended to supplement one’s diet and are not considered food.

Most people will say ‘I know I don’t eat what I should eat, but sometimes it’s more about convenience than being healthy so I ‘eat’ supplements’ to stay healthy.’ This statement can lead us into very unhealthy eating habits and over supplementation. And eating habits can be the hardest ones to break. Let’s break some of our bad eating habits this year!

These 5 ideas may help you eat better and be healthier.

  • Control your serving size to meet your caloric needs that fit your goals (weight loss or muscle gain)
  • Prepare your food in advance so you are getting proper amounts of your macronutrients (protein, carbs and fats)
  • Choose whole and fresh foods whenever possible
  • Balance calorie intake and ‘know’ your food (cut back on fast food)
  • Consult with coach or nutritionist about supplements you may need to complement your better eating habits
